Steps to calories calculator
This calculator turns a step count into an estimated walking distance, the energy those steps use and how long they take. Enter your steps, height and body weight.
How it's calculated
Distance comes from your stride length, estimated as 41.5% of your height, a widely used rule of thumb. At 170 cm that's about 0.71 m per step, so 10,000 steps is about 7.1 km (4.4 mi).
Energy is estimated at 0.00057 kcal per step for each kg of body weight, which approximates walking at a moderate pace on flat ground. For 10,000 steps that's about 399 kcal at 70 kg and 456 kcal at 80 kg. Hills, faster walking and carrying weight raise the true figure.
Time assumes about 105 steps per minute, a typical moderate walking cadence. Brisk walkers often take more steps per minute, so their time is shorter.
These are population estimates, not measurements, so your real numbers may differ. To turn your numbers into a weekly step ramp with interval walks, use the walking plan builder.
Frequently asked questions
How many calories do 10,000 steps burn?
About 340–570 kcal for people weighing 60–100 kg, on this calculator's moderate-pace estimate. Heavier bodies, faster walking and hills use more.
How many km is 10,000 steps?
Usually about 6.5–7.5 km, depending on your height. At 160 cm it's about 6.6 km; at 180 cm about 7.5 km.
Why does my fitness tracker show a different number?
Trackers use their own formulas, often including heart rate and resting energy. Neither is exact, so compare like with like and watch the trend over weeks.
How long does it take to walk 10,000 steps?
Roughly 1.5 hours in total at a moderate pace of about 105 steps a minute, though most people collect them across the day rather than in one walk.
